“A WORK OF ART IS NEVER FINISHED. IT IS MERELY ABANDONED”

— E. M. FORSTER

WORK IN PROGRESS

I have been meaning to go back to artworks I had abandoned over years. To me, they are incomplete. It always bothers me how okay I am leaving them as they are. I am unsettled with the satisfaction I get on knowing I can always make them ‘better’ but never seem to have enough motivation to do so. The dried drips on the canvas are left as temporary ellipsis to leave me in eternal ponder-mode. The harsh shadow and highlight strokes are left as highlighter markings- to buy time figuring out where the mediation tones and textures should lie. To be honest, these habits are simply projections of my own insecurities- my reluctance showing myself on the internet- my fluffiness with all its trimmings and accents. However, I should understand that I am also Work in Progress. Unlike Foster’s quote, I choose not to abandon myself.

As this painting is a Work in Progress, So am I.
